Mid Century Living

Last October my Husband and I moved into a lovely late sixties terraced property in a lovely village not far from our previous home.  We both loved the area we were currently in and had lots of family and friends nearby, but our two bedroom ground floor maisonette just wasn't big enough for our growing family anymore.  We both fell in love with our new home the moment we stepped through the door during the first viewing.  There was quite a lot of work which needed doing in terms of renovating the property so we got planning before we'd even got our hands on the keys.
My husband suggested, and I immediately agreed, that it would be wonderful to restore the beautiful mid century property back to its original glory with vintage furnishings throughout.  And so we set to work on creating our ideal retro home.

Although it may seem a little backward, we started by decorating the downstairs open plan living area as this would be in fairly constant use with a baby in the house.  So, here is the first installment of our vintage home!

We tried to keep as many of the sixties design features in the house as possible, including the glass paneled porch, the floating staircase and the beautifully restored parquet flooring.  Nick did a fantastic job of sourcing us some vintage G Plan teak furniture as well as a gorgeous reproduction Charles Eames chair.  The design of these pieces really reflects the iconic look of the sixties and gives the room a wonderfully authentic feel.  The same is true of the George Nelson starburst wall clock and Castiglioni Arco Lamp.

The framed classic movie posters were our way of injecting a bit of our own personality and our shared love of cinema into the room without distracting from its retro design features.  These reprints were total bargains but they look like they should have cost a fortune! My star find for this room though has to be the armchair and sofa which are part of the DFS 'Atomic' collection.  We spent months pondering over the possibility of purchasing an original sixties suite but were ultimately put off by the lack of fire resistant treatments which are standard in all modern furnishings.  I almost couldn't believe my luck when I stumbled across these mid century inspired beauties!  They're super comfy too!

Thanks for checking out our retro home, be sure to subscribe to keep up to date with all of our renovation work!
