Hello again to all my lovely readers! Following several requests I've decided to go ahead and do my first vintage style hair tutorial. This style is something that I've been doing a lot recently as it's really quick and easy to do, so it's perfect for beginners! I hope you enjoy having a go at this retro inspired updo, remember to let me know what you think in the comments below!
TIP: This style works best on day old hair as it holds much better! Don't worry if your locks are freshly washed though, just secure everything in place with a spritz of hairspray.
1. Start by sectioning off the front of your hair. It doesn't have to be super neat, but aim for a horseshoe or 'U' shape.
2. Clip this front section out of the way and pull the rest of your hair into a really high ponytail. By high, we're talking right on the top of your head!
3. Tie a hairband around the ponytail but on the last twist only pull your hair half way through the hair to create a loop.
4. Fan the loop out into a bun shape and secure in place using bobby pins. Then smooth any loose ends of hair from the ponytail over the bun and fix these in place too.
5. Now we move back onto the front of our hair. Using a fine comb, tease all of the hair we separated out earlier, one section at a time. This will give us the volume we want at the front for our roll. You will probably look like something out of a Tim Burton film by the end of this step but don't panic!
6. Using a smoothing brush gently smooth the hair to one side. The trick here is to just smooth out the very top layer of hair so as not to brush out the volume you have just created.
7. To create the roll, wrap the smoothed section of hair around two fingers, starting near the tip and working down to the roots. This can take a bit of practice to get right as everybody's hair is slightly different but let your hair be the guide. Remember, practise makes perfect, so don't worry if this step takes you a few attempts the first time you try this style.
8. Once you are happy with the shape and size of your roll pin it in place with a few bobby pins. Try to put these right in the centre of the roll, this way they will be less obvious.
9. Fold a bandana or headscarf so that you have a long rectangle. Place the centre of the scarf at the nape of your neck and pull it nice and tight.
10. Tie a knot or a bow on the top of your head, just behind the roll. You can secure the scarf in place using a couple more bobby pins or a pretty clip on each side.
And there you have it! A really quick and simple vintage hairdo that's incredibly practical without sacrificing on style! I'd love to know how you get on with this tutorial so drop me a comment and let me know what you think. Thanks for stopping by!
