Fabulous Faux Bangs

Hello there my vintage lovelies!  All you regular readers may have noticed the absence of a blog post last week and I'd like to start off by apologising for that.  It's been a rather busy couple of weeks in our house which was topped off by my daughter and myself both going down with the lurgy!  Yuck.  So to make it up to all my lovely followers, I have not one, but two vintage hair tutorials for you this week.
The first part I will cover here and the second will be posted later in the week so watch this space!

So... Fabulous Faux Bangs!  I have taken inspiration for this look from an iconic hairstyle of the 1950's as made famous by the likes of Bettie Page.  This classic pin-up look is a great way to create a bit of interest without the need for heat styling, back combing or lots of time!  I had a few comments from readers after my last hair tutorial who were of the opinion that their hair was to fine to easily style into a roll.  The great thing about this style is that you don't need thick hair to get great looking volume - this look works great on most hair types!

1.  Begin by sectioning off the top of your hair.  If your hair is thick
or very long then you won't need to go further than halfway to your crown.  If like me you have thin hair, or if you have a fringe, take it all the way back.  Tie the rest of your hair back out of the way.  I tied mine into the updo I demonstrated in my last tutorial.

2.  Starting from the tip, roll the sectioned off hair around a hair rat or wadding, all the way up to your forehead.  I use a hair donut that fastens with a popper, which can be picked up from somewhere like Superdrug or Boots.  Try to find one that matches as closely as possible to your hair colour as this will make it much less visible.

3.  Whilst holding the hair rat firmly in place with one hand, secure it with a couple of bobby pins at each end.  Again, colour matching is key to keeping everything hidden.

4.  Use your fingers to gently spread your hair out along the length of the hair rat.  Try to take your time here and be gentle so that the hair remains snuggly wrapped around the wadding.  If required, use a little bit of pomade to smooth over any bumps and give your hair a sleeker finish.

5.  Using a few more bobby pins fix your hair in place so that it covers both ends of the hair rat.  Smooth out any flyaways and spritz with a little hairspray.

6.  If you like, you can add a headscarf to finish off the look.  The scarf can also help to cover up any untidy or unsightly bits at either side of fringe.

This is definitely one of my favourite go to looks at the moment as it's so quick and easy to do.  I also love the fact that, unlike a lot of vintage hairstyles, it's just as successful on freshly washed hair as it is on day old!  Why not give it a go, and remember to check back later in the week when I'll be showing you how to perfect your Victory Rolls!  Thanks for stopping by!
