Shortly after we moved into our current home, a friend of ours very kindly lent us their copy of 'Ideal Home' Magazine from July 1959, so that we could get a bit of inspiration for decorating our new place. I absolutely love looking back through old books and magazines to gather ideas. It's wonderful to imagine somebody picking up their copy from the local newsagents decades ago and eagerly flicking through the pages. Even the advertisements are simply fascinating!
Kitchen appliances, from ovens through to fridges, are marketed in such a manner that would now make most women cringe in horror. In today's world you'd never get away with the suggestion that the best way to keep your wife happy is to buy her the latest kitchen gadget! This issue has some wonderful articles on interiors, so today I thought I would just share a few pictures of them with all of my lovely readers.

Regular followers of Mother of Vintage will have seen my article on our Mid Century Living Room. Since publishing the post we have mad a few alterations to the room, including the addition of several large house plants, taking inspiration from the below article in Ideal Home. Foliage was common place in interior design of the time, and we love the different feel it brings to the room. The natural form of the plants is such a contrast to the very structured symmetrical design of the furniture, we think it really compliments the overall look of the room.
The next room on our decorating to do list is our kitchen. Initially we had planned to rip out the existing kitchen entirely and start again from scratch, but once we had moved in we realised the cupboards were of a good quality and it seemed a real shame to waste them. We have now decided to revamp the room with new handles, tiling and worktops throughout. I absolutely adore all of the kitchen designs shown is this magazine. The curved edges and sloped drawer fronts are so unique and different to anything seen in modern kitchens. We will definitely be taking some inspiration from these gorgeous rooms!
What can I say about this colour scheme? Isn't it wonderful? The pink may be a little be too bold for our tastes (I'm not sure I could convince my other half on that one...) but the combination of that lemon yellow and cornflower blue is just stunning!
I hope you've enjoyed these beautiful images as much as I have. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to drop me a comment in the box below!
